Severus realises what is going to happen and is too quick for the enemy. Instantly with a snap of his fingers he turns the snake (temporarily) into a cream bun.
Then he Apparates away.
Realising that he has been given a wonderful gift - a way out of his many problems - he reappears, creates the illusion that he is dying, passes his memories on to Harry and then disappears again when the coast is clear.
He is now free at last of his obligations but also
cannot
stay around visibly. No doubt he is in
the background somewhere (add
your own ideas in here) but finally he goes to the Continent, under
another name, to fight the forces of darkness there (add your own
adventures in here).
Finally he meets (add your own princess in here) who has a castle in (add your own romantic country in here) and after many misunderstandings (add your own Mills & Boon in here) marries her and has as many children as you want to add in here.
This makes me happy – now I can sleep at night!
But of course, if you don't like Snape, feel free to ignore this. After all, it is your imagination ... It's good that everyone is different.
